Background of the Study

Maternal nutrition is a crucial factor in determining pregnancy outcomes, fetal development, and overall maternal health (Abdullahi & Musa, 2024). In many low-resource settings, including Kaduna State, malnutrition among pregnant women remains a significant challenge due to poverty, food insecurity, and lack of awareness about proper dietary practices (Olawale et al., 2023).

Community health workers (CHWs) play a vital role in delivering maternal healthcare services, providing nutritional counseling, and ensuring that pregnant women receive adequate dietary support (Bello et al., 2024). Their presence in rural and underserved areas makes them valuable assets in bridging healthcare gaps and improving maternal nutrition. However, the effectiveness of CHWs in addressing maternal nutrition in Kaduna State remains understudied. This research aims to assess their impact on maternal dietary behavior, nutritional knowledge, and overall pregnancy health outcomes.

Statement of the Problem

Despite the presence of CHWs in Kaduna State, maternal malnutrition persists, leading to adverse pregnancy outcomes such as low birth weight, anemia, and increased maternal mortality (Aliyu & Ojo, 2024). Many pregnant women lack access to adequate dietary information, and CHWs may face challenges in service delivery, including insufficient training and resource constraints. This study aims to assess the role of CHWs in improving maternal nutrition, identifying barriers to effectiveness and proposing strategies for enhancement.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To evaluate the contribution of CHWs in promoting maternal nutrition awareness.

  2. To assess the effectiveness of CHWs in improving dietary practices among pregnant women.

  3. To identify challenges faced by CHWs in delivering maternal nutrition services.

Research Questions

  1. How do CHWs contribute to maternal nutrition awareness in Kaduna State?

  2. What is the impact of CHWs on dietary practices among pregnant women?

  3. What challenges hinder the effectiveness of CHWs in improving maternal nutrition?

Research Hypotheses

  1. CHWs play a significant role in enhancing maternal nutrition awareness.

  2. Increased engagement with CHWs leads to improved dietary practices among pregnant women.

  3. Resource constraints and inadequate training limit the effectiveness of CHWs in maternal nutrition programs.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study focuses on the role of CHWs in improving maternal nutrition in Kaduna State. Limitations include variations in CHW training, differences in healthcare access, and self-reported dietary behavior among pregnant women.

Definitions of Terms

  • Community Health Workers (CHWs): Trained health professionals who provide primary healthcare services at the community level.

  • Maternal Nutrition: The dietary intake and nutritional status of women during pregnancy.

  • Dietary Practices: The eating habits and food choices of individuals.
